The Stockholm Guitar Quartet & Trio perform works by composers J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Brahms, Debussy and more!
"A Unique Classical Guitar Collection" offers an impressive retrospective of classical guitar music by the Swedish label Opus 3, for the compilation of which Peder Riis could also be won. Riis is the founder and director of the Stockholm Guitar Quartet and has held a professorship in classical guitar at Lund University since the eighties. Jan-Eric Persson discovered the Stockholm Guitar Quartet 28 years ago. The first recording became the first big success and bestseller for the label, which was only two years old at the time. Two more albums followed in 1980 and 1991, which significantly cemented the reputation of the quartet as well as that of the label. "A Unique Classical Guitar Collection" also contains music from the Opus 3 releases of the Stockholm Guitar Trio, the guitar duo Duodecima and the solo album by Peder Riis. Matthias Böde about the SACD version in STEREO 2/2007: "Once again, the Scandinavian label OPUS 3 delivers a prime example of natural sound quality. Swedish guitar formations up to quartets play arrangements of more or less well-known symphonic pieces from the Baroque to the modern era for their instrument. A less effective, spatially captivating recording, in which the guitars were captured from a distance, so that they sound in the acoustic environment and do not seem to play directly in the speaker, as is sometimes the case."
To this day, the Stockholm Guitar Quartet is the only guitar quartet in the world to transcribe and perform music for four differently tuned guitars. All instruments of this quartet come from the workshop of Georg Bolin. On the third album, special 8-string instruments from this guitar maker were used for the first time. All recordings were made in churches at the time.
