Soul Provider is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Michael Bolton. The album was released on June 19, 1989 by Columbia Records. This was the album that turned Bolton into a superstar. Supported by numerous successful singles that reached the top of the charts worldwide, the album achieved longevity on the Billboard Top 200. It reached #3 in the US, going 6x Platinum and sold over 12,500,000 million copies worldwide.
With The Hunger, Michael Bolton exceeded all expectations. The album was crowned platinum and no one had to give the ballad singer the tip to ride the wave and record a follow-up in a similar style. Accordingly, commercial success is not lacking either: five Top 40 hits and millions of albums sold speak for themselves. Bolton produced most of the tracks on Soul Provider himself, cooperating with the best composers of romantic rock ballads of his time: Diane Warren and Desmond Child. With the Ray Charles cover Georgia on My Mind and the interpretation of Laura Branigan's How Am I Supposed To Live Without You, Bolton also does everything right. Maybe Michael Bolton didn't rock stadiums with his music, but a place at cozy fireplace evenings is and remains assured.
This CD is part of a series of Sony Music K2 HD productions, which were produced at the instigation of the national company in Hong Kong. Sony Music in Hong Kong takes First Impression Music as a model, who succeed in selling their recordings at high prices in Hong Kong, which is notoriously infected by product piracy. That's why Hakamata Takeshi, who is also responsible for FIM productions as a mastering engineer, has had some enormously popular productions reworked by the JVC FLAIR Studio in Tokyo. The K2 HDs are made in Japan and come in a beautifully designed hardcover booklet in a protective slipcase with the K2HD logo. As with FIM, the CDs themselves are also protected in a fleece sleeve.
Attention: These CDs are actually remastered (K2 HD Mastering) and should not be confused with CDs available in Japan that have only been transcoded (K2 HD Coding).
"Michael Bolton is no fool, and when he broke through to platinum sales with The Hunger, nobody had to tell him to record a follow-up devoted to more of the same. Bolton produced most of the record himself, and he teamed with the cream of the era's romantic rock ballad writers, people like Diane Warren (who gets five co-credits here) and Desmond Child, while the R&B copy this time was Ray Charles' version of "Georgia on My Mind." He also reclaimed "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" from Laura Branigan. The result was five Top 40 hits and millions of albums sold. Maybe Bolton wasn't the king of the hockey rinks, but his voice was now stoking the romantic fires in bedrooms across America, which is nice work if you can get it." - William Ruhlmann, allmusic.com, Rated 4/5 Stars
