Universal Music Japan and Deutsche Grammophon are proud to release the new album by Russian star pianist Daniil Trifonov for the first time as an excellent-sounding UHQ double CD: "My American Story – North" is a very personal musical journey in which Trifonov travels across America. The first album of a two-part album begins in the USA, where Trifonov spent almost half of his life. It includes a series of works that reflect his experiences in his adopted homeland. The eclectic repertoire "gave me access to many angles, styles, cultures, places, people, stories, and expressions that have shaped and shaped my conception of America," Trifonov says. The selected pieces range from jazz and swing to minimal music and popular film music.
Two piano concertos form the framework of the album: Gershwin's popular "Concerto In F" and the world premiere of a new concerto written especially for Trifonov by Mason Bates. For both works, the pianist will be accompanied by the Philadelphia Orchestra and its music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In addition, Trifonov plays solo works by John Adams, Aaron Copland, John Corigliano and Dave Grusin, Trifonov's own transcriptions of various jazz classics such as Art Tatum's "I Cover The Waterfront", Bill Evans' version of "When I Fall In Love", selected Hollywood soundtrack classics such as "The Firm" and "American Beauty", and John Cage's legendary "4′33". "I didn't want to present an anthology," says Trifonov, "but simply music that I feel connected to, some of my favorite pieces that speak to me musically."
UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. UHQCDs, unlike conventional CDs, are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. To protect the softer photopolymer from scratching, another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied. The combination results in a significantly reduced reflection of the laser light inside the CD and an unrivalled precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with normal CD players. Musically, the result is a sound that is strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes.
While Universal Music Japan's first UHQCD series relied on the DSD data of previous SHM-SACD releases, albums that had not previously been released as SHM-SACD are now being released with increasing popularity. Typically, the master tapes of the Universal Archive are re-converted to DSD for this purpose. UHQCDs are ideal for music lovers who want to get as close as possible to the sound of the recording, but do not have a SACD player.
