Memphis-born trumpeter Booker Little was one of the most promising stars in jazz in his time. However, his career was abruptly ended by his tragic death at the age of only 23. Thanks to his sensational talent as a musician and composer, Little made a name for himself in 1956, at the age of just 18, when he joined Max Roach's band, replacing Clifford Brown after his death – another great trumpeter who had died far too early. Unfortunately, Booker Little recorded only a few albums as a bandleader, including his amazing debut album "Booker Little 4 & Max Roach", recorded for United Artists. The greatness of Little's inspiration, the rousing brilliance of his trumpet, his flawless technique and his imaginative melody lines are best expressed on "Booker Little 4 & Max Roach".
Appropriately supported by Roach's powerful drums, the ideas of the great tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Tommy Flanagan and double bassist Art Davis, the program begins with "Milestone" by Miles Davis, includes the well-known standard "Sweet And Lovely" and a fantastic reinterpretation of "Moonlight Becomes You". The real centerpieces, however, are the three original songs by Little himself: "Rounder's Mood", "Dungeon Waltz" and "Jewel's Tempo".
In the course of the extremely popular "Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series", Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for the analog reissues of Blue Note US such as "Tone Poet" and "Classic Vinyl" - as a limited Japanese UHQCD with OBI Stripe. The original recording sessions for "Booker Little 4 & Max Roach" took place in October 1958 at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York, and on January 30 and April 15, 1959 at Olmsted Sound Studios, New York.
UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. UHQCDs, unlike conventional CDs, are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. To protect the softer photopolymer from scratching, another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied. The combination results in a significantly reduced reflection of the laser light inside the CD and an unrivalled precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with normal CD players. Musically, the result is a sound that is strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes.
While Universal Music Japan's first UHQCD series relied on the DSD data of previous SHM-SACD releases, albums that had not previously been released as SHM-SACD are now being released with increasing popularity. Typically, the master tapes of the Universal Archive are re-converted to DSD for this purpose. UHQCDs are ideal for music lovers who want to get as close as possible to the sound of the recording, but do not have a SACD player.
