Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 31/500!
Miles Davis has rarely painted so expressively and freely with colors. "Sketches Of Spain" is the third of four albums ("Miles Ahead", "Porgy And Bess" and "Quiet Nights") on which Davis worked with composer and arranger Gil Evans and an orchestra. In Evans, he found a like-minded partner who helped him bring out tones, shades, layers and textures. What they have achieved together is still considered groundbreaking in the 21st century! "Sketches Of Spain" is also considered one of Miles Davis' most accessible albums. Since there was less improvisation on the album than on other albums, some of Miles' contemporaries did not classify it as jazz. According to Rolling Stone, Davis replied: "It's music, and I like it!" Nevertheless, the album was awarded a Grammy in 1961 as best jazz composition. In 2003, "Sketches Of Spain" was ranked 356th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Jazzwise magazine included the album in the list "The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World".
Programmatically, "Sketches Of Spain" is based on Spanish folk music, a development that began with "Flamenco Sketches" on the legendary "Kind Of Blue". Miles Davis and Gil Evans combined Spanish themes, lush orchestrations, romantic timbres and Davis' lyrical methods to create a tender ceremony that still resonates more than six decades after its original release. Whether it's the dark piece "Concierto De Aranjuez", made famous by Davis' flugelhorn playing, or the "Solea", based on a folk tale, "Sketches Of Spain" captivates with its extraordinary ideas and innovations. Miles Davis, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb, percussionist Elvin Jones and an 18-piece orchestra create a breathtaking atmosphere: polyphonic motifs, short improvised solos, fanfare-like swings and contrapuntal changes characterize the flamenco-spiced pieces. Davis' famous Harmon muted trumpet is complemented by a selection of bassoons and French horns.
AudioNautes now pays tribute to this classic with a sonically excellent, strictly numbered and limited UHQCD. The AAD remaster comes from a copy of the original stereo master.
UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. UHQCDs, unlike conventional CDs, are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. To protect the softer photopolymer from scratching, another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied. The combination results in a significantly reduced reflection of the laser light inside the CD and an unrivalled precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with normal CD players. Musically, the result is a sound that is strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes.
All About Ultimate High Quality CD (UHQCD):
Many years have passed since the birth of the Audio Compact Disc (CD) back in 1982. By use of High-Quality materials and a totally different manufacturing method, the definitive version of audiophile audio CD was born. Playable on any CD player, the Ultimate High Quality CD greatly surpasses all previous CDs before it!
The Ultimate High Quality CD (UHQCD):
UHQCD is a radical change to the CD manufacturing process itself. The conventional wisdom about CD manufacturing, which had remained largely unchanged across the world for over 30 years, has been exhaustively questioned. Through this effort, the ultimate in quality was attained - a level of quality that is certainly impossible to achieve with existing CD discs.
The Ultimate High Quality CD was developed through an effort to improve audio quality by simply upgrading the materials used in ordinary CDs to higher quality materials. For the substrate a high-transparency and high-fluidity polycarbonate (a type of plastic) of the type used for LCD panels was used, while for the reflective layer, low-cost, common aluminum was replaced with a unique and expensive alloy of high-reflectivity.
Differences in manufacturing methods:
Conventional CDs are produced using the technique of injection molding to form "pits" of data on polycarbonate material. Metal plate on which "pits" representing audio source data are formed is used as a die. This is called the "stamper." Polycarbonate is melted at high temperature and poured into the die to duplicate the pit patterns on the stamper.
This method is efficient because it enables high-speed production, but it does not enable totally accurate or complete duplication of the pits on the stamper. As a melted plastic, polycarbonate is inevitably viscous, so it cannot penetrate completely into every land and groove of the tiny pits of the stamper.
The Ultimate High Quality CD photopolymer is used instead of polycarbonate to replicate the pits of the stamper. In their normal state, photopolymers are liquids, but one of their characteristic properties is that they harden when exposed to light of certain wavelengths. The advantage of this property, perfect replication of very finely detailed pits was achieved. Photopolymers in the liquid state are able to penetrate into the tiniest corners of pits on the stamper so that the pattern of the pits is reproduced to an extremely high level of accuracy. The Ultimate High Quality CD reproduces audio with greater precision and at a level that is impossible to achieve using conventional CD production technology!
