Carlo Maria Giulini conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for this 1971 recording of Mahler's First Symphony.
From 1969 to 1978, the Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini was permanent guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Georg Solti, who wanted the support of another conductor, had suggested this agreement in order to be able to fulfil his obligations at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Giulini was a perfect complement to Solti and produced some excellent recordings for EMI with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The present Mahler recording convinces with its beautiful phrasing and precise orchestra. Giulini does not succumb to the temptation to take advantage of the virtuosity of the musicians and to achieve enthusiasm through fast tempo. In addition, there is the very good recording quality of the tapes, produced on March 30, 1971 at the Medinah Temple in Chicago by Christopher Bishop and Carson Taylor. A recommendation!
"Although Giulini premiered in England at Glyndebourne in Falstaff, it was his direction of Visconti's production of Don Carlos at Covent Garden that made him well-known in Britain. In 1955, he debuted in the United States with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra...He was appointed principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony in 1969, and was the director of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1973 to 1976. He succeeded Zubin Mehta as musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1978, remaining at that post until 1984." - excerpts from allmusic.com
